“Born in Eastern Tibet in 1937, Kyabje Garchen Rinpoche of the Drigung Kagyü lineage came of age during the final years of Tibetan sovereignty. When his three-year retreat was close to completion, imminent invasion by the Communist Chinese disrupted some of the trainings. Against the wishes of his lamas, Rinpoche transitioned from solitary retreat to a life as a guerrilla fighter for two years in the harsh mountain terrain. It was during this period that he was offered an escape route for safe passage to India, which he declined, remaining in the mountains with his comrades. Eventually, he was captured and sent to a labor camp. During the twenty years of his imprisonment, he became a disciple of Kathog Khenpo Münsel Rinpoche. Due to the love and samaya shared among his fellow prisoners — some of the greatest Vajra Vehicle masters of the twentieth century — the labor camp became his training ground and, eventually, a pure realm.” (VkGarR)
“Finally, in 1980 the political prisoners who had survived were set free into a changed world. Garchen Rinpoche returned to the Nangchen area to rebuild his monastery. At a time when others were afraid to propagate Dharma teachings publicly, Rinpoche was the first to resume offering vows of refuge ordination to any and all who requested them — even at the cost of his life. He worked tirelessly to reestablish the monastic Sangha and ritual practices that had long been interrupted.” (VkGarR)
“Having received travel permission from government authorities in 1993, Rinpoche visited Nepal and India, which eventually led him to the United States, where he settled in 1999. Thereafter, he toured extensively, establishing Dharma centers throughout North America, Europe, and Asia while also building temples, housing for monks and nuns, schools, and medical facilities in eastern Tibet. He retired from touring in 2019 and currently resides in Chino Valley, Arizona.” (VkGarR)
