Difference between Method and Function in Python

Here, key differences between Python Method and Python Function in Python are explained. Java is also an OOP language, but their is no concept of Function in it. But Python has both the concept of Method and Function.

Python Method

  • Method is called by its name, but it is associated to a Python object (dependent).
  • A method is implicitly passed the object on which it is invoked.
  • It may or may not return any data.
  • A method can operate on the data (Python instance variables) that is contained by the corresponding Python class

I am in method_abc of ABC class

Functions

Function is block of code that is also called by its name. (independent)
The function can have different parameters or may not have any at all. If any data (parameters) are passed, they are passed explicitly.
It may or may not return any data.
Function does not deal with Class and its instance concept.

Difference between method and function

Simply, function and method both look similar as they perform in almost similar way, but the key difference is the concept of ‘Class and its Object‘.
Functions can be called only by its name, as it is defined independently. But methods can’t be called by its name only, we need to invoke the class by a reference of that class in which it is defined, i.e. method is defined within a class and hence they are dependent on that class.

Snippet from Wikipedia: Python (programming language)

Python is a high-level, general-purpose programming language. Its design philosophy emphasizes code readability with the use of significant indentation.

Python is dynamically typed and garbage-collected. It supports multiple programming paradigms, including structured (particularly procedural), object-oriented and functional programming. It is often described as a "batteries included" language due to its comprehensive standard library.

Guido van Rossum began working on Python in the late 1980s as a successor to the ABC programming language and first released it in 1991 as Python 0.9.0. Python 2.0 was released in 2000. Python 3.0, released in 2008, was a major revision not completely backward-compatible with earlier versions. Python 2.7.18, released in 2020, was the last release of Python 2.

Python consistently ranks as one of the most popular programming languages, and has gained widespread use in the machine learning community.
