NetWare (1989)

Novell NetWare was an early and powerful file sharing / print sharing network operating system. It was first released in 1983 and supported DOS and CP/M clients and was initially unique in that it shared individual files rather than entire disk volumes. Initially NetWare servers ran on a proprietary Motorola 68000 system but quickly changed to IBM PC where it supported a very wide variety of third party hardware and NICs. It used a cooperative tasking server environment and had some advanced features usually only found in mainframe products.

NetWare LANalyzer (1996) Download count 1 Utility Windows NetWare LANalyzer, originally developed by Excelan Inc, is a packet analysis tool for Novell NetWare systems. It can decode packets, gather statistics, and identify physical devices on a network. The original product was a specialized piece of hardware.

It offered peer-to-peer networking up to 25 machines, used ODI network card drivers, and offered some support for talking to full Novell Netware networks. It was sometimes bundled with DR-DOS. The Network Support Encyclopedia Professional Volume (NSEPro), was Novell's high-priced technical knowledge base on a CD-ROM. Intended for Novell support professionals, it contained up-to-date product support documentation in a searchable hypertext system.

It competed against Lotus 1-2-3 and Excel, and had several advantages including tabbed sheets, and the ability to handle up to a million rows. Quattro Pro was the subject a lawsuit by Lotus, simply because because Quattro Pro copied their menu user interface, but Lotus claimed this was not allowed. This also affected The Twin and VP-Planner.

Unixware is a variant of Unix from Novell that incorporated its Netware features. It was later absorbed and merged with SCO Unix, which took on the Unixware name.

2.x Icon WordPerfect (1983) Download count 110 Word Processor Windows During the late 1980's, WordPerfect was THE standard word processor for DOS based PCs in big business. Under DOS, it competed mostly against Wordstar. WordPerfect for Windows enjoyed some success in the early Windows environments, but was quickly displaced by Microsoft Word for Windows. Later Windows versions were part of Borland Office/Novell PerfectOffice/Corel Office/Corel WordPerfect Office.
