Murach’s Mainframe COBOL

Return to IBM Mainframe Topics, Mainframe development

Murach - Mainframe COBOL - COBOL - IBM COBOL - Visual COBOL

by Tom Taulli

“This course, which is based on the mainframe book called Murach’s Mainframe COBOL, will teach the essentials of the COBOL language, COBOL reports, COBOL file handling, CICS (for COBOL transactions) and DB2 (for COBOL databases).”

“Are looking for employment opportunities with COBOL development? In this course, the learner will get comprehensive instruction on three main themes of COBOL development. First, there will be a look at using the VS Code editor and how to connect this to a live mainframe. This platform will allow for a better understanding of the fundamentals of Cobol language, such as the COBOL commands, COBOL data structures, and the use of COBOL tools like JCL to COBOL compile and launch COBOL programs. Next, there will be a look at COBOL tables, COBOL reports and COBOL file handling. These are critical for COBOL development since the focus is on COBOL business applications. And finally, the COBOL course will look at specialized COBOL use cases. These include COBOL CICS, which allows for real-time mainframe processing of COBOL user input, and COBOL DB2, which is a relational database. At the end of this COBOL class, the learner will have the COBOL skills and COBOL knowledge needed to be a successful entry-level COBOL developer.”
