Apologia Educational Ministries, Inc. 1998</ref> It is still a mystery how exactly this molecule converts light (photons) into useful chemical energy, but all the ingredients of the process are known. Once the chemical energy is created, it begins the well-understood Calvin cycle of photosynthesis.
When exposed to light, photosynthetic activity gives chlorophyll its characteristic bright green color; when light is not present the pigment has a much darker color.
