Clair is a surname of English and French origin.

Clair, originally spelt Clare, originated from the town of Clare in Suffolk, England. The surname, originally styled de Clare, was first held by Richard fitz Gilbert, 1st Lord of Clare (known as Richard de Clare) following the Norman Conquest of England in the 11th century AD. It is derived from the Middle French and Old French cler literally meaning "clear" and "bright" which itself is derived from the Latin clārus of the same meaning.

Its popularity in the United Kingdom peaked during the 1970s and 1980s; in 1974 it was the second most popular female first name and in 1984 was still sixth, but by 1997 it had fallen out of the top 100 after several years of sharply declining popularity.

The name was traditionally considered male, specifically when spelt Clair; however, it is now commonly used as a female name and is usually spelt Claire.
